Classic Cultivar Guide

Aeonium 'Zwartkop' — The Black Rose Aeonium

Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkop' — Dutch for "black head" — is the world's best-known near-black succulent, its deep burgundy rosettes almost appearing painted on. SouthQuest Farm grows closely related near-black Aeonium hybrids in Yunnan's high-UV, high-altitude conditions, which naturally intensify this pigmentation.

About This Cultivar

'Zwartkop' is a cultivar of Aeonium arboreum developed for its dramatic near-black rosettes, growing on branching stalks up to 30–60cm. The dark colouring comes from high anthocyanin production, a pigment response triggered by strong UV exposure — plants kept in low light will often revert to a duller green-purple.

Care Basics

  • Light: As much direct sun as your climate allows without scorching — colour intensity is directly tied to light exposure
  • Water: Soak-and-dry; more active growth in cooler months
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings root readily after a 2–3 day callous period
  • Common issue: Fading to green in insufficient light — this is reversible by increasing sun exposure
💡 Sourcing note: We grow near-black arboreum-lineage hybrids from our own breeding lines — including 'Black Magic' and 'Ink Wash Painting' — rather than a line specifically labelled 'Zwartkop'. Share a reference photo and we'll confirm the closest match in stock.

Common Questions

Aeonium 'Zwartkop' — what buyers ask

Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkop' (Dutch for "black head") is the best-known near-black Aeonium cultivar, developing deep burgundy-black rosettes on branching stalks up to 30–60cm. Colour is most intense with strong light exposure; plants can revert to green in shade.
We grow several near-black arboreum-lineage hybrids developed through our own breeding lines, including 'Black Magic' and 'Ink Wash Painting', which show comparably deep pigmentation thanks to Yunnan's high-UV, high-altitude growing conditions. Anthocyanin pigmentation (the compound behind the black/purple colouring) develops in response to UV stress. Kunming's 2,000m elevation delivers UV intensity comparable to the Canary Islands' volcanic highlands, so dark-leaved cultivars achieve near-black colouration naturally, without chemical stress treatments.
