Aeonium Arboreum — The Tree-Form Parent Species
Aeonium arboreum is a shrubby succulent species from Morocco and the wider Mediterranean, growing on branching woody stems up to 1–2m tall. It's the parent species behind most of the dark, glossy-leaved Aeonium hybrids collectors know today — including the 101 old-stalk arboreum-lineage varieties SouthQuest Farm grows in Yunnan, China.
About the Species
Aeonium arboreum was one of the first Aeonium species introduced to Western horticulture, prized for its unusual tree-like branching habit — most succulents stay low and clumping, but arboreum builds a woody trunk topped with rosettes at each branch tip. In cultivation, this single species has produced dozens of named cultivars through selective breeding, ranging from the near-black 'Zwartkop' to variegated tricolour forms.
Care Basics
- Light: Bright, indirect light or morning sun; strongest colouration develops with several hours of direct light
- Water: Soak-and-dry; more active growth in cooler months, semi-dormant in peak summer heat
- Propagation: Stem cuttings root readily after a 2–3 day callous period
- Common issue: Leggy, stretched growth (etiolation) from insufficient light — move to a brighter spot to correct
